The following is taken directly from a recent COINS e-mail:

                        Early Ballot Election Information
Early ballots will not be mailed earlier than Monday, May 4. If you will be at a different address from May 4-May 19 please let Maricopa Elections Department know where to mail your ballot. You can go to www.recorder.maricopa.gov click on elections then early ballot voter request to fill out the information the elections department will need.

It is my understanding that ballots cannot be mailed to another address. Please see Betsy at Town Hall and request a provisional ballot.  You will need a photo ID to get your ballot.

Councilman Bob Coady

Dear Citizens:

First, let me thank all of you that voted for me in this past election. Your support was most appreciated, and I hope these election results will convince the next council to be more open to citizen input.

Tonight council and citizens were updated on the Federal stimulus funds that would be available to Carefree. According to Gary Neiss, Carefree would be eligible for $580,000 for road work. There were a number of residents at the meeting hoping to hear that some type of pedestrian walkway would be included in this road work. In truth, all we really learned was that this money may be available, but we would have to front all expenses, that ADOT would be in charge of all projects and we would have to pay ADOT for overseeing these projects to boot. Suffice it to say that there are a lot of strings attached. As a result, nothing was decided until we have all the facts, and I am not sure when that will be. But, you will know when I do.

One thing did come out in this discussion on road work, and that involved rubberized pavement. Over the years, a number of you have written asking why Carefree doesn’t rubberize the main roads. Tonight the actual cost was mentioned; we use a paving called MTR, it costs approx. $1.10 per sq. yd. Rubberized pavement costs $15.00 per sq. yd.

Council approved a contract for Gary Neiss as the new Town Administrator. He will receive $90,000 a year in his new position.

Dr. D. Burdick, the new Superintendent of the Cave Creek Unified School District, introduced herself and gave us some interesting facts: The school district encompasses 174 sq. miles. There are 5,960 students, with 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 1 high school.

The mayor announced that there will be a special budget meeting, open to the public, on April 21, at 5PM

CALL TO THE PUBLIC: Jim Peirce requested that the town update citizens on the status of the Easy Street project. He stated it had been approved 4 years ago, and nothing has happened. Mayor Fulcher said that they would include an update at the May meeting.

SHERIFFS SECTOR: In Feb. MCSO issued 281 citations, 118 for speed, 0 noise, there were 2 burglaries, and 1 hit and run with injuries at the Carefree/ Cave Cree intersection.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH: If there was a report card, how would you rate this outgoing council?

LAST MONTH’S QUESTION: Do you believe the town should approve 18 wireless cell towers, 24 feet high, and disguised as faux cactus in residential areas?

I received quite a large number of e-mails on this issue. Interestingly enough, there were 2 in favor of the cell towers. The vast majority however, were adamantly opposed to the concept of cell towers in residential areas.

CAMPAIGN CORNER:

Early ballots for our May General Election will soon be mailed out. Mayor Fulcher, Vice Mayor Meyer and Councilman Gardner have all withdrawn their names from the May ballot. This means that there are 4 council positions open and there are 4 running for that position; Gemmill, Koteas, Schwan and Vanik. However, this election is slightly different. John Traynor is running as a write-in candidate.

John has long been an advocate for more conservative spending within Carefree and brings a great deal of business experience that Carefree could use. Please check out his web site at http://traynorincarefree.com/default.aspx

In the event that you haven’t visited Peter Koteas’ web site please go to www.peterkoteas.com .

Contrary to the other candidates, both Koteas and Traynor, from the beginning, have been staunch supporters for direct election of the mayor.

FACT: Your ballot will state to "vote for 4." You do not have to vote for 4; you only have to vote for as many of the candidates that reflect your personal views and positions.

Proposition 404 Direct Election of the Mayor update:

This is it people, in May we will have our opportunity to finally decide if citizens should have the right to vote for the mayor, and I am hoping for a landslide.

Do be aware that the next council will vote for the mayor and not you. As I said, we can only hope that the new council is more prepared to listen to our citizens when they are sworn in.

RECYCLE BIN: Please mark your calendar! We will be holding a special RecyclingTripleheader on May 16th. We will be collecting electronic waste, document shredding and safe drug disposal. The recycling site will be our usual site at Tom Darlington and Ho Rd. Hours will be from 9-1.

We will take both prescription and over the counter drugs.

Place all tablets and capsules in a clear, plastic baggie (drugs can be combined).

All liquid meds should be in their bottles.

All meds are to be handed directly to a deputy sheriff.
