Dear Citizens:
This evening, Council elected a mayor and vice mayor. Prior to the election Councilman Koteas made a motion, in the spirit of cooperation, that council adopt the same criteria for mayor as had been argued by Councilmen Miller, Schwan and Gemmill prior to election (only those councilmen with 50% + 1citizen votes be considered). The motion was seconded by Doug Stavoe and denied by Betsy Wise, who was acting as Chair for the mayoral selection. Glen Mill nominated David Schwan as mayor and Peter Koteas nominated Bob Coady. David Schwan was elected mayor (4/3-Coady, Koteas & Stavoe against). Bob Coady nominated Doug Stavoe for vice mayor and Mayor Schwan nominated Glen Miller. Miller was elected vice mayor (4/3-Coady, Koteas & Stavoe against). Mayor Schwan advised citizens that they are there to listen and observe, not to participate during council meetings. CALL TO THE PUBLIC: Jim Peirce requested that Councilwomen Vanik as president of Kiwanis of Carefree, address allegations of Kiwanis not being a legally registered non-profit charitable organization. Tom Rolls requested that council change the consent agenda to allow for citizen input, as in other agenda items. John Traynor requested that this new council take a firm position against the negative politics of PACs that has become detrimental to the betterment of Carefree. Al Swanson congratulated the new council and asked that they do the right thing and not be contentious, but move forward. Mike Heidorn stated that Wal-Mart would negatively impact the intersection of Carefree Hwy and Cave Creek Rd as that intersection had not be designed to accommodate that amount of traffic. Jo Gemmill invited everyone to the July 2nd fireworks display at the Carefree Conference Resort to celebrate Carefree’s 25th year of incorporation.
SPECIAL PUBLIC SECTOR:
The past
council voted, last week, to send a letter to Cave Creek asking
that they consider already zoned commercial property for Wal-Mart
rather than up zoning residential.
DID YOU KNOW:
The
commercial building that the past council purchased with the
thought it would pay for itself, based on tenant occupancy, no
longer has a tenant?
SHERIFF’S SECTOR:
Welcome to
new District 4 Captain, Ken Homes.
ELECTION RESULTS:
Proposition
404, Direct Election of the Mayor, was approved by a landslide,
with an impressive
73.3% of
the vote.
In case you haven’t heard the General Election results; Peter Koteas-863, David Schwan-552, Bob Gemmill -528, Susan Vanik-509. Write-in candidate John Traynor was only 11 votes behind Vanik. QUESTION OF THE MONTH: Some citizens that were out of town for the summer did not receive their requested early ballots till the day before the election. Did you receive your ballots in a timely manner? If you did not, please let me know.
LAST MONTH’S QUESTION:
Do you
believe that the next council should take a more pro-active rule
in Black Mountain Sewer?
People felt that the new council should not only take a more pro-active role with this sewer increase, but be more available to deal with issues that involve citizens in general.
RECYCLE BIN:
We had one
heck of a triple-header recycling event last month. The entire
e-waste truck was filled. 232 boxes of documents were shredded.
According to MCSO, their deputies collected approximately 70
pounds of prescription and over the counter drugs were collected
for proper disposal.
My thanks to the Sonoran News and The Foothills Focus for advertising this event. EVENT CALENDAR: P& Z Meeting- 6/8, 5:00 PM, Town Council Meeting- 7/7, 5:00 PM.
